It's a delicate balance in a string quartet to find the right blend of personalities and the creative drive and direction necessary to stay at the highest level. For the Ying Quartet, that balance has been a part of their story from the beginning. It began with four siblings: David, Janet, Phillip and Timothy.

In the early 1990s, four siblings each made their way to the Eastman School of Music to study their string instrument of choice. Although they all arrived separately, and for their own reasons, all of them were drawn to Eastman because of the reputation of their string quartet in residence: the Cleveland Quartet.
